Ethical fashion can be defined as the production of textile items with a conscience. With the concept of social responsibility gaining ground, corporates all over the world are recognizing the importance of environment protection and ethical business. Fashion houses are no exception. More and more fashion designers and textile producers are striving to produce goods that do not harm the environment and are cruelty-free. Ethical issues in fashion are emerging.

Ethical fashion WHEN?

The concept of ethical fashion is old; however, it is gaining more and more popularity in the modern times. As awareness about environment conservation, cruelty to animals and ethical issues in business is rising, fashion brands are also increasingly adopting ethical means. Customers are also becoming more and more aware of ethical fashion and the demand for ethically produced fashion products is on the rise.

Ethical fashion WHY?

Why should textile producers and customers adopt ethical fashion? Animal and human rights activists as well as environment protection activists have brought up ethical issues related to the fashion industry time and time again. Some of the major ethical issues that have come up are:

The production of cotton entails the use of a large amount of pesticides, which is harmful to the environment and to people. Figures indicate that nearly 2 billion USD worth of pesticides are used annually, of which pesticides worth about 819 million USD have been declared toxic as per the guidelines of the WHO. The health of the workers spraying pesticides in cotton fields and the people living around these fields are adversely affected. Pesticide poisoning can lead to symptoms such as headaches, tremors, nausea, depression, seizures, loss of consciousness, and, in some extreme cases, death. Empty pesticide containers are sometimes reused, which again leads to serious ill effects on the health of the people using such containers. The use of toxic pesticides leads to air, water and soil pollution. Apart from the pests, pesticides also cause the death of other small animals and birds consuming them inadvertently.

The chemical dyes that are used in the production of garments also lead to skin problems. Problems such as eczema, rashes and skin irritation have been noted among people on account of dangerous toxins in the clothes worn by them.

Another serious ethical issue that arises in the fashion industry is the issue of cruelty to animals. The cruelty to animals behind the preparation of a fur coat has been brought to light time and again by animal rights activists. One fur coat costs the life of about 55 wild mink, 40 sables, 11 lynx, 18 red foxes, 11 silver foxes, 100 chinchillas, 30 rabbits, 9 beavers, 30 muskrats, 15 bobcats, 25 skunks, 14 otters, 125 ermines, 30 possums, 100 squirrels or 27 raccoons. The pain caused to the animals while trapping them and extracting their fur is unthinkable. Similarly, a tremendous amount of suffering is caused to animals in extracting wool and leather, which goes into the preparation of fashionable shawls and boots.

Human rights activists have also pointed out the various ethical issues behind the preparation of a fashion product. Extremely low wages and long hours, unhealthy and unsafe working conditions, exhaustion, sexual harassment and mental stress are some of these issues.

Women of the World! Do you really need animal skins to make yourselves look more beautiful than you already are?

Does wearing dead cats, dogs, mink, ferrets and foxes enhance your feeling of well-being, beauty and self worth? Will this year’s frippery be next years throw outs? Will all those animals have given their lives for you in vain?

The emotional vibrations of fear and misery from the animals will be held in the pelt just as it is in meat. I wonder how healthy this is for the wearer.

The animal kingdoms which live alongside us are our teachers. Through them we learn about compassion, love and beauty. They patiently teach us care and devotion. The animals often sacrifice themselves in order that we experience these things and so learn to know the ‘more’ of who we are.[You don't know who you are until you know what you are not].

I ask all of you, as the supposedly most advanced race on the planet’ do we not have a ‘duty of care’?’ Are we not responsible as guardians for the animals in our care? Yet, look at what we do to them! We hunt for sport, kill for fun and monetary gain. We breed animals for reasons like their fleet feet or looks, often producing genetic heritages which cause pain and discomfort during their lives.

What monsters we have become! We are still so near the gladiatorial ring- what next in our excesses? Shall we return to watching people kill each other for our amusement and pleasure?

Beauty, ‘looking good’ what are these things really about? Could it be about feelings that we are unlovable, unworthy, not good enough and lacking in self-worth? There is nothing wrong in wanting to look good and no judgement attached to this, however when we take it to extremes are we not fooling ourselves about the reasons for it- aren’t we just trying to cover up our perceived inadequacies?

[It is an old adage, but true']-Beauty comes from within. Looking good and being beautiful is a front you present to the world, so that the world will judge you positively. It has been said that it is none of your business what other people think about you, it is what you think about yourself that really counts.

A truly beautiful person is perhaps someone who is kind, compassionate and caring. Someone whose very being is a gift to others, serving selflessly. Giving a smile to a stranger, chatting to a cashier, aiding without thought for gain. These things produce your own radiant inner light, this is your beauty which shines forth and dazzles. Everyone has an inner beauty, but we have all become so clever at concealing it from ourselves and others [kindness and compassion being seen by some as weakness in today's world]. I suggest that our perception of the reality of who we are, needs adjusting. The focus needs to be changed so that we can be seen for who we are: beauteous wondrous creative beings.

Many people are of the opinion that faux fur coats are rather gaudy, but personally I happen to think that if done properly they can look fantastic. The great thing about a faux fur coat is that you can get it in any style of animal that you want. You couldn’t get a real tiger coat, but a tiger faux fur coat? I own several of these exotic coats and I love them. The field the soft ground for is really unparalleled and the imitation of the animals coloring and patterns makes a quality faux fur coat the fun thing to wear.

Of course a lot of my friends have a good chuckle over my choices of faux fur coats. “You are a successful business woman,” they say, “what are you wearing and not God when he could actually be wearing the real thing?” “No chance,” I reply, and I proceed to tell them about why I have a love affair with my faux fur coat. What is tacky isn’t wearing a faux fur coat, it is, in my estimation, sporting something barbaric, cruel, and absurdly expensive on my back when the imitations are so clever as to be almost as good as the original.

Not to mention are just as warm and comfortable as the real thing. A fur coat only tells someone that you are rich, something which I don’t particularly care to broadcast to the world. I’m not quite that insecure. A faux fur coat tells people that you are a creature of unique and individual tastes who refuses to follow convention. That’s what I would like the world to know about me

I have been queried, because I like faux fur coats so much, if there are any other synthetic material is a prefer used over their natural counterparts. While I do confess a certain fondness for pleather, in that case it is usually far superior in my estimation to deal with the authentic article. For starters, I don’t feel anywhere near as guilty buying leather as I would if I bought fur.

While only one cow was slaughtered to make my leather jacket, dozens of poor adorable little rabbits would have to give their lives to make one actual rabbit fur coat. I don’t know that is fair or even make sense, but either way that’s how I feel. I guess it’s probably not so fair for the cow.

Besides that, leather is much softer and suppler than pleather. Although a faux fur coat is often as smooth and pleasant as real fur without the possibility of allergens, between pleather and good leather, there is scarcely more than a similarity. Others actually pretty basic that you prefer it to be either black or brown. It comes from a single animal, and in only a select few colors, so there is no sense in getting pleather in something along the lines of a zebra pattern. Now that’s tacky.

Fur coats Cleaning: your coat should be cleaned and conditioned every year to keep them looking their best. Depending on how often you wear your fur has a lot to do with how often you should clean it. For example if you wear it once or twice a year you can have it cleaned every other year. If you wear it more than this than I’d recommend having it cleaned once a year. If you’re thinking you don’t have to have your fur cleaned at the furrier you are only going to be hurting yourself. Fur coats need special attention and this is what these companies do. It will make your coat last longer and look better so there’s no way you’re going to lose if you clean it.

Fur Coats Storage: you can’t just leave your coat hanging in the closet because it will inevitably start to shed. Fur coats need to be kept in cold climates because they are so delicate and expensive. If you don’t it dries the fur out which will cause it to shed and fall apart. Your furrier can also store your fur as well as clean it.

Caring Tips:

Give your fur coat some space to breathe. Make sure its not cramped up into your closet. You don’t want it to sit in a dirty closet either because it can start to smell and shed and ruin your fur.

Don’t ever sit on your fur coat because you can crush it or get bacterial on it.

Make sure to have it conditioned. Conditioning gives your coat necessary oils for longevity of your fur.

Do not get your fur coat wet. If it does do not throw it in the drier or panic. Just let is dry by itself.

If you see any early signs of it wearing or tearing, have them repaired immediately to make sure your fur coat has a long life.

Keep your fur coat in a cool vault. Preferably somewhere that is air conditioned 24 hours a day.
